Memorial Health’s CEO called for regrouping of the Savannah safety-net system after it turned out that Novant Health was not going to back a partnership. Novant, which is based in North Carolina, cited conflict with Chatham County Hospital Authority as its primary reason for terminating the negotiations. Carl Armato, Novant’s CEO, through a memo, pointed out that the authority had indicated its determination to go beyond its role and inserting itself into in-depth oversight of Memorial’s operations, which potentially results in inconsistency in the direction from the different governing bodies.
Maggie Gill talking about the hospital lease explained that the hospital authority strived to better their position and that of the county. The move was viewed as capable of leading to an unexpected financial gap for Memorial. A significant financial infusion would have been brought to the hospital system by the unresolved Novant deal. Experts pointed out that other systems would take the opportunity to be suitors if the Novant deal remained dormant.
Gill highlighted of her vision to regroup and consider the available opportunities since for-profits hospital were likely to come in. However, she added that a system that is a nonprofit would be perfectly fit Memorial.

Maggie Gill, president and CEO of the Memorial Health, was named as the 2016 “135 Nonprofit Hospital and Health System executives to know.” The annual list included some of the largest and successful non-profit healthcare organizations in the country. Gill was also featured in the list of the “130 Women Hospital and Health System Leaders to know.”
Gill joined Memorial Health as the VP of finance before she was later promoted to COO. She steered several important strategic initiatives that included expansion of clinical services, development of new centers of excellence, and erection of new facilities. In 2006, she was tasked with extra responsibilities as an interim CFO, a position that saw her initiate a financial turnaround that resulted in an annualized cost saving that totaled to $30 million. In 2011, Gill was named as the principal head and CEO of the Memorial Health – a position that she holds to date.
